Question of the Day: Which Is Your Favorite Social Network and Why?

Web 2.0 Logos , Terinea social networks

As a follow-up to my Survey on Social Networks Worldwide post, I am curious to hear from you guys, which is your favorite social network and why. I myself must stick with Facebook for the time being. I like the fact that not everyone can see my profile; that I can add and learn about lots of interesting applications and support causes; that I can see all my friends’ activity on my homepage. This last feature is genius – by showing me the different groups my friends are joining, the different links they’re posting, the various causes they support, I am driven to action by curiosity. Facebook has an amazing ability for user “stickiness” to say the least. I must say that the latest MySpace-like advertising on Facebook has caused me some distress (those blinking ads are the worst). I am really hoping that Facebook doesn’t deteriorate to MySpace design standards. At least for now, I feel its advantages outweigh my need to distract my eyes from the blinking promotions.

Which is your favorite?

Thanks to Terinea for the pic.

  • flickr
    delicious
    facebook

    Are three of my favourites

We only have a MySpace page becaue we have developed a couple of band websites before.

  • they all censor!
...but I would place my bets on facebook as far as being the Microsoft of the era
Yahoo should buy them now... People think that they can just design a better interface and people will come. The next interface will be for better Video conversation. Till that comes along "facebook" is king. MySpace has really lost the war... it's amazing that they are moving so slow on this. and "Linkedin" could of been a contender... but is going to become the "WordPerfect" of the generation... everyone says it's better till it's too late because they just weren't. It is going to suck when "facebook" starts censoring everyone.... I look forward to the next generation. We already have a winner. I would love it if "facebook" loses that lawsuit that those Harvard kids are waging. The ideal thing for the industry would be if "facebook" technology went open source... this would keep the feminist sex police from turning free thought into yesterdays news.
  • Terinea:

I also like Flickr a lot. Although I feel that the community itself is more geared towards people who are into photography. Delicious... I find that saving each article there is much more time consuming than on Digg.

    Noah:

It would be interesting to see who buys Facebook eventually.
  • I'm not crazy about social networks, but Facebook is impressive - features wise. I really like the tiny applications and they seem to be cooler in general.
  • Sarit:

Any particular reason why you're not into social networks? I'd be interested to hear.
  • Mainly because my blogs do the job pretty well (actually, it's beyond my modest expectaions!).
I appreciate the all good social networks can do if you're not a blogger.. but I feel that having 100% control of the way I present myself to the world is much better.
  • Sarit:

You can still have the same control on the social networks, displaying only the information that you wish to.
I completely understand what you say about blogging. I also feel that what I have gained from blogging definitely exceeded any expectations I initially had. However blogging is only one of the many ways today to express yourself and gain contacts.
  • I still have far more friends on email so I guess Thunderbird :)
  • Adi
I would say the network I'm most active at is LinkedIn.
And there is the blogging community itself (which is a kind of social network).
  • Seems like LinkedIn is still going strong even though a lot of people have apparently left it for Facebook....
  • Adi
  • Flickr (where me and most of my friends store all of our digital photos)
    LinkedIn

    Why LinkedIn and not Facebook?
Because its more professionally oriented - serves as an online resume and oriented to connect you with other professionalls\job opportunities etc.

Facebook offers adding photos and notes but I have my blog and Flickr for that.

I'm still waiting for a Flickr-YouTube-Facebook fusion kind of site where I could store both my photos and videos (and maybe other stuff - notes\documents\etc too)
  • Adi:

    I read your post.
I wasn’t surprised by your response. I have just heard that many people left LinkedIn for Facebook. I myself have not. I actually wrote a post entitled Facebook Vs. LinkedIn:
    http://www.blonde2dot0.com/blog/2007/07/19/face...
where I discuss a few things that LinkedIn does better than Facebook. I think that professionals see LinkedIn as a far better channel to find potential business partners and employees. It may not be as exciting as Facebook, but it accomplishes its purpose.

    Eran:

I love Flickr too, but as I said to Terinea above, I feel that is more geared towards people who are really into photography. I like to have the ability to add videos, text, applications, etc. and other ways to interact with people.
Regarding LinkedIn, I agree that it is more professionally oriented than Facebook. Yet I have made some professional connections through Facebook as well.
I am still waiting for the Flickr-YouTube-Facebook fusion site also. One site where you could social network and store all your photos/videos, etc. Hmmmm…startup?
  • Lets open a startup :)
I guess best of bread social networks will get there anyway...

I favor linkedin for professional dealings and facebook for socializing. There is too much clutter in facebook in my opinion; I am learning how to deal with it. Facebook provides more opportunities to make new contacts and share thoughts than linkedin. There might be too much moderation (or monetization efforts) in linkedin; don't you think?
  • I use Facebook for professional dealings as much, if not more than LinkedIn. I do believe that LinkedIn charges outrageous prices for their premium subscriptions.
